There can be few bus routes in southern England that connect as many tourist attractions as routes 20 & 50.

Stratford-upon-Avon and Oxford sit at either end of these connecting routes and are of course major tourist destinations. These buses also pass through the Cotswold town of Chipping Norton and stop outside the gates of Blenheim Palace near Woodstock. The bus drivers are not tour guides but most of them are quite happy to announce the stop for Blenheim Palace if asked.

Service 20 runs approximately every hour (except on Sundays). In addition, there are extra buses between Blenheim Palace and Oxford. Regrettably the Chipping Norton to Stratford section (route 50) has recently been reduced and now only runs a few times per day.

Route 20/50 is a normal bus service that does not charge rip-off prices. Stagecoach Oxfordshire operate the route and sell an all day Explorer ticket for £6 which can be used on most Stagecoach buses for as many journeys as you wish. (A more expensive ticket is required if you wish to use the X5 route).

Explorer Prices

Company Adult Child / Senior Group*

Stagecoach Warwickshire 6.50 4.50 12.00
Stagecoach Swindon 5.00 3.50 10.00
X5 Explorer 9.00 7.00 15.00

The price you pay for a Stagecoach Explorer depends on which Stagecoach company you buy it from. Once you have bought your ticket it will be accepted by other Stagecoach companies for the rest of the day (a more expensive 'X5 Explorer' is required for use on the X5 route). It can be used on all the routes shown on this page and most other Stagecoach routes.

*A group or family ticket covers up to 5 people (maximum of 2 adults) travelling together. There is one exception: family tickets issued by Stagecoach Swindon cover up to 4 people.

An Explorer ticket can be bought from the driver of the 20/50 or any other Stagecoach Oxfordshire bus. It can also be bought on the buses of other Stagecoach companies. An Explorer bought from a neighbouring Stagecoach company will be accepted on routes 20 and 50.

E.g. if you travel from Milton Keynes or Bedford you can buy an Explorer on the X5 service for £9 (£15 for a group). More information on bus trips from Milton Keynes here

Sunday Service

On Sundays, Stagecoach run an hourly bus between Blenheim Palace and Oxford but do not run to Chipping Norton or Stratford. However, Stratford Blue run 4 buses every Sunday over the entire Oxford to Stratford route. Stratford Blue cannot sell Stagecoach tickets but they do accept Stagecoach Explorers & Goldriders on this route. The Sunday service runs faster than its weekday equivalent & does not require a change at Chipping Norton so in some ways it is better than the weekday service.
