| A railcard gives discounts on normal rail fares for 12 months. There are different types of railcard available but most give discounts of 34%. Only the most common railcards are described. Railcards for HM Forces, the disabled and for small areas of the country are not covered here. |
Family Railcard £24 |
Any adult can buy a Family Railcard. The buyer is named on the card. Optionally, a second adult can also be named on the card. To obtain discounted fares, at least one of the adults named on the card and one child under 16 must travel together. Up to 4 children may travel in the group and another 2 adults as well as those named on the card may travel. All members of the group must travel together for the whole journey. No one in in the group has to be related so really it is more accurate to think of it as a group railcard rather than a family railcard. All adults in the group are given a 34% discount on the normal adult fare. Children are given a 60% discount on the child fare. The card can be used for rail journeys throughout Britain and for most types of standard class ticket but in south-east England it cannot be used in the weekday morning peak period.

Senior Railcard £24 |
Any person aged 60 or over can buy a Senior Railcard. There is a 34% discount on the normal adult fare. The card can be used for rail journeys throughout Britain and for most types of ticket but in south-east England it cannot be used in the weekday morning peak period.

Young Persons Railcard £24 |
Any person aged 25 or under can buy a young persons railcard. Full time students aged 26 or over may also qualify. There is a 34% discount on the normal adult fare. There is a minimum fare for journeys started before 10:00 (either £8 or £16 depending on ticket type). However, there is no minimum fare at weekends or during July and August. The card can be used for rail journeys throughout Britain and for most types of standard class ticket.

Network Railcard £20 |
Any adult can buy a Network Railcard for discounted off-peak travel in south-east England. A wide area is covered including Northampton and Kings Lynn in the north, Oxford and Salisbury in the west, Clacton and Southend in the east and most of the south coast. More details on the rail page. |
