Any adult can buy a Family Railcard. The buyer is named on the card.
Optionally, a second adult can also be named on the card.
To obtain discounted fares, at least one of the adults
named on the card and one child under 16 must travel together. Up
to 4 children may travel in the group and another 2 adults as well
as those named on the card may travel. All members of the group
must travel together for the whole journey.
No one in in the group has to be related so really it is
more accurate to think of it as a group railcard rather than a family
railcard.
All adults in the group are given a 34% discount on the
normal adult fare. Children are given a 60% discount on the child fare.
The card can be used for rail journeys throughout Britain and for most
types of standard class ticket but in south-east England it cannot be used
in the weekday morning peak period.
