Norfolk Broads near Reedham on the Lowestoft line

 

Cheaper Fares via Cambridge

East Anglia is home to many interesting historic cities, coastal resorts and the Norfolk Broads. A Saver return from Milton Keynes to Norwich costs £46.50 and requires travel via London. However, by using a combination of rail and bus, day trips to many destinations in East Anglia are possible for only £21  (even less if you travel in a group or make several day trips in the same week) . 

Take the Stagecoach X5 service to Cambridge. The railway station at Cambridge is about 1 mile from the city centre. There are frequent Stagecoach buses to the station. Take service c1, c3 or c7 from the stop opposite the X5 terminus. From Cambridge station there is an hourly rail service to Norwich via Ely and a less frequent service to Ipswich.

Buy a £9 Stagecoach Explorer ticket from the driver of the X5. This ticket is valid on Stagecoach buses all day and covers the bus journey to Cambridge (click here for details of group, child & senior discounts). The same ticket will be accepted on local Stagecoach buses to Cambridge railway station. It is also valid further afield on bus route to Ely & Bury St. Edmunds - but it is not accepted on rail routes.  Ask at Cambridge railway station for an Anglia Plus ticket. Anglia Plus is a one day pass covering rail routes in East Anglia (including all the routes shown on the diagram). It also includes travel on local bus services in Norwich. 

A One Day Anglia Plus ticket costs £12. There is also a 3 day ticket (any 3 days out of 7) for only £24.

NORWICH

Norwich is well worth a visit with its millennium funded library/visitors centre, cathedrals, cobbled streets and castle right in the centre of the city. The river Yare brings the Norfolk broads into the city.

Cromer pier
CROMER

Cromer was a popular holiday resort in the 1800s. Its pier dates back to 1901 and was recently re-opened after £2.4 million of restoration work.

There are 3 branch lines from Norwich station and each of them passes through a different part of the Norfolk Broads

The Last Bus

While a day trip to Norwich is certainly feasible, it is more of a struggle to spend time in Cromer and arrive back in Cambridge in time for the last bus to Milton Keynes.

On weekdays the last bus departs Cambridge at 18:40.
