Gateway to Other Attractions

Brighton is not just about piers and beaches. It is also a gateway to other attractions on the south coast.

The South Downs Way extends for many miles through Hampshire and Sussex. It skirts around the northern edge of Brighton passing through Devils Dyke. From Devils Dyke there are spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. Not surprisingly this is a popular location for Hang gliding and Paragliding - so much so that at busy times the two sports have to take turns to avoid getting in each others way. During the summer an open top vintage bus operates from Brighton sea front to Devils Dyke.

The coastline to the east of Brighton is characterised by rugged chalk cliffs and massive sea defences. Twenty miles east of Brighton, the South Downs Way meets the coast at Seven Sisters. - a famous landmark and also the site of Seven Sisters Country Park.

Travel a few miles further east and you come to an even more famous landmark - Beachy Head and its recently re-located lighthouse.

How to Get Around

Bus services in the Brighton area are extensive and it is possible to reach many attractions without much difficulty.

The main bus operator is Brighton & Hove. Not only do they have their own on-line timetables but if you phone them on 01273 886200, they will send a free copy of their glossy Bus Times magazine. Bus Times also includes timetables and route maps for other bus companies in the area.

Particular bus routes to note are service 77 to Devils Dyke (Sundays & public holidays)*; service 12 to Seven Sisters and Eastbourne (great cliff top views from this double decker); service 13 - same as 12 but also runs to Beachy Head (Sundays only).

Two other leisure services are the 78 to Stanmer Park and 79 to Ditchling Beacon - both services operate on Sundays and public holidays..

An alternative route to Beachy Head is via Eastbourne. Eastbourne is much nearer to Beachy Head than Brighton. During the summer months, take the train to Eastbourne and catch the City Sightseeing tour. This open-top service runs from Eastbourne sea front to Beachy Head.

Bus Fares

There are a number of competing bus companies operating in the Brighton area. Most of them sell and accept each others Explorer tickets but there are some other deals worth knowing about.

Brighton & Hove sells a £3.00 Saver ticket for unlimited travel on its services. Brighton & Hove operates services 12 & 13 which run all the way to Eastbourne, so £3.00 is good value. £3.00 is the fare from the 1 Stop Shop on Brighton station or from selected newspaper shops; you can also buy Saver tickets on the bus but it works out more expensive - £4.20 for a Saver valid to Eastbourne.

Alternatively, you can buy your bus ticket at the same time as you buy your rail ticket to Brighton. Simply ask for Brighton PLUSBUS. This will cost £2 on top of the normal rail fare (£1.30 if you have a railcard). Although the PLUSBUS ticket is not valid all the way to Eastbourne or on the 77 or 79, it can easily upgraded to cover all these routes for just £1. Simply show your PLUSBUS ticket to the Brighton bus driver and ask for a £1 Supersaver upgrade ticket.
